Photography Tips for Storytellers
Keep Your Photos Simple

When it comes to storytelling with photos, a little goes a long way. By focusing on one person or a simple subject, it’s easier to compose a photo that has balance and plenty of “negative space” (empty space around your subject). Plus, your photos will actually stand out more on social media if you keep it simple.
Try Different Angles

Most people take photos from about chest height. Try getting low or shooting from above; think outside the box! Walk around your subject to see where the light hits best, especially when it comes to portraits.
Also, play around with the orientation of your camera — “landscape” orientation is when the camera is held horizontally and “portrait” orientation is when the camera is held vertically.
Use the Grid
A quick way to improve photos using your mobile phone is by turning on your camera’s gridlines. This series of lines on the screen helps you use the “rule of thirds” — a composition principle that says an image should be broken down into thirds, horizontally and vertically.
Using the rule of thirds, your goal is to place points of interest in the intersections or on the lines. This helps create more balance in your photos.
