MLPS FAQs
You've got questions, we've got answers.
What is Maine Loves Public Schools (MLPS)?
MLPS is a storytelling campaign that celebrates and shares the great things happening in Maine's public schools. Started by members of the Maine Education Leaders Professional Learning Collaborative, we document and share stories that build trust and positive engagement with our school communities.
Why was MLPS created?
We believe everyone in Maine should hear more about what makes our public schools special. Public schools connect our communities, and by sharing authentic stories from inside our schools, we help build understanding and support for public education in Maine.
What is a Storytelling Ambassador?
Storytelling Ambassadors are champions within their communities for Maine Loves Public Schools. They share their own stories, encourage others to share, and raise awareness about MLPS. They're the connectors who help bridge the gap between schools and the wider community, ensuring that the great moments happening in our schools reach those who might not otherwise see them.
How much time commitment is required to be a Storytelling Ambassador?
We know everyone is busy, so we've designed this program to be flexible and fit into your schedule. You decide your level of participation. Whether you share one story or one hundred, every contribution matters.
What specifically does a Storytelling Ambassador do?
There are many things a Storytelling Ambassador can do to help the Maine Loves Public Schools campaign. You can:
- Follow all of the MLPS social media accounts, engage with the content by liking, commenting or sharing, and encourage others to do the same.
- Present MLPS to your school community so everyone knows about this opportunity to share their stories.
- Identify and collect existing photos and videos from school events, sports games, performances, and classroom activities.
- Encourage colleagues to share classroom moments and student achievements.
- Take photos or videos of special events, everyday moments, and school traditions.
- Interview staff members, students (with appropriate permissions), or community members about what makes your school special.
What does it mean to “share a story?”
The stories you gather and capture are the fuel for the campaign which is being carried out online through the MLPS website and social media accounts.
How can I help collect and share existing content from my school?
Schools capture countless amazing moments - from concerts and sports events to classroom projects and assemblies.
As a Storytelling Ambassador, you can help ensure these stories reach a wider audience. Connect with your school's photographers, yearbook staff, or event organizers. Let them know that MLPS provides an easy platform to share their existing photos and videos.
You can also work with your school or district administration to include MLPS information in staff meetings or newsletters, making it simple for everyone to contribute their stories.
Do I need special equipment or technical skills to participate?
Not at all! A smartphone is all you need to get started. If you can take a photo or short video, you're ready to be a Storytelling Ambassador.
We provide tips and guidance to help you create engaging content with whatever equipment you have.
What kinds of stories should I be sharing?
Share anything that shows both the ordinary activities like chemistry experiments or reading groups, as well as activities and events that may surprise those who haven't been in a school in awhile.
The most powerful stories often capture simple, authentic moment and can be photos, video, or text.
Do I need permission from my school administration to participate?
Before you begin collecting stories, connect with your school administration to understand your school's photo/video policies. Most schools have standard release forms that parents/guardians sign during enrollment. You'll need to know if there are any students whose parents haven't signed these releases or have specific privacy requests. Your administration can also inform you about any other guidelines or restrictions they'd like you to follow. This ensures we respect everyone's privacy while sharing school stories.
How do I share my stories?
Simply upload your stories using this link at mainelovespublicschools.org. Our social media team will take care of sharing them across our social media platforms. We make it easy for you to focus on capturing the moments that matter.
What are the best practices for interviewing and photographing subjects?
Keep it natural and authentic. For photos, simple compositions often work best. For video interviews, have a conversation rather than a formal Q&A. We provide regular tips and guidance to help you capture compelling stories.
How can I encourage others in my school community to share their stories?
Share your enthusiasm! Let colleagues know about the program and how easy it is to participate. You can direct them to mainelovespublicschools.org to sign up. Remember, the more voices we have sharing stories, the richer our narrative becomes.
How do I connect with other Storytelling Ambassadors?
We regularly share tips and resources through our email series, and we're building a community of ambassadors across Maine. We'll let you know about opportunities to connect with and learn from other ambassadors. If you have suggestions about ways to connect you can email us at info@mainelovespublicschools.org.
I’ve seen people wearing Maine Loves Public Schools t-shirts. How can I get one?
Right now, the MLPS t-shirts are a gift from us for signing up to become a Storytelling Ambassador. Once you register we’ll mail a t-shirt to you.
